Why do Citroën engines fail, and which reconditioned unit is the right match for your vehicle?

Across the Citroën range, engine failures follow well-documented patterns depending on the engine family. The 1.6 HDi (DV6TED4 / 9HZ) — widely used in the C3, C4 and Berlingo — is known for its fragile turbo and EGR valve issues, but it is above all the timing chain failure that permanently condemns the 1.6 THP units (EP6CDT / 5FV, EP6FDT / 5GZ) fitted to the DS3, DS4 and C4: a widely documented problem, typically caused by premature chain stretch, which manifests as rattling on start-up followed by catastrophic timing loss. The 2.2 HDi (P22DTE, codes 4HH / 4HU / 4HV) fitted to the Jumper and C8 is prone to cylinder head cracking and high-pressure injection failure. The 1.2 PureTech (EB2DT / HNZ, EB2ADTS / HNS, HNV) — now a staple in the C3, DS3 and C4 Cactus — suffers from premature wear of the oil-bath timing belt, recognisable by white smoke and abnormal oil consumption. These failures frequently result in a complete engine replacement rather than a partial repair.

Identifying the right unit: engine codes and pitfalls across the Citroën range

The range covered here spans 1998 to 2026 and encompasses both diesel and petrol engines across around twenty models, from the Jumper to the C4 including the C5, the Jumpy, the Berlingo and the DS3. The first step is to check the engine code stamped on the block rather than relying solely on the engine capacity: the same 2.0 HDi can correspond to code DW10FUD / AHN, DW10FUC / AHK or DW10FUE / AHM depending on the power output and generation — three references that are not interchangeable. Likewise, the 2.2 HDi in the Jumper comes in 4HH, 4HU and 4HV variants, which differ in their mounting points and mapping. For recent petrol units, the 1.5 BlueHDi (DV5RCF / YHT) and the 2.0 BlueHDi (DW12RUC / 4HH, DW12RUE / 4HK) each have their own reference; mixing them up will result in a fitment incompatibility.
