From the variable-geometry 1.9 TDI turbos of the 1990s to the IS38 units on the Leon Cupra: the failure points you need to know before ordering

On SEAT models, turbo failure is rarely down to chance. The variable-geometry 1.9 TDI — fitted to the first-generation Leon, Ibiza, Toledo, Altea and Cordoba — is well known for clogging of its variable-vane mechanism, particularly on the AGR, ALH, AHF, AJM 90 and 110 hp units. The classic symptom is a gradual loss of boost, often accompanied by a cold whistle and the engine dropping into limp mode. On the 130 hp variants (ASZ) and 150 hp (ARL), higher thermal stress accelerates bearing wear. Before any replacement, the oil circuit must be checked: insufficient lubrication or degraded oil is frequently the root cause of failure, and fitting a new turbo without addressing this will simply reproduce the fault.

2.0 TDI and 2.0 TSI: two generations, two distinct issues

On the 2.0 TDI 170 hp — engine codes BMN, CBBB, CEGA, CFFA, CFFB, CFGB, CFGC, CFGD, CFJA, CFJB, CLLA, CLLB, DLUB — the variable-geometry turbo is subject to significant stress; oil returns clogged by a saturated DPF or a faulty EGR are the primary cause of deterioration observed. On the 2.0 TDI 110 to 150 hp (CKFC, CRBC, CRLB, CRMB, DCYA, DFFA, DFGA), the turbo reference varies according to the exact engine code: the same stated output can correspond to different turbos. On the petrol side, the Leon Cupra and Cupra R — engine codes CJXA, CJXB, CJXC, CJXE, CJXG, CJXH, CYFB, DJHA, DNUA, DNUC, DNUF — use the fixed-geometry IS38 turbo with wastegate, known to be sensitive to foreign bodies and actuator fouling. All turbos listed on this page are new parts, sold as direct sale with no exchange required.

Identifying the correct reference for the smaller 1.2 TSI, 1.4 TDI and 1.4 TSI engines

Entry-level engines account for the most frequent identification errors. On the 1.4 TDI 70 and 80 hp (AMF, BAY, BHC, BMS, BNM, BNV, BWB), several engine codes coexist across close model years with different turbos. On the 1.4 TSI 140 and 150 hp, six distinct engine codes — CHPA, CHPB, CPTA, CUKB, CZDA, CZEA — can be found on Leon and Ibiza models that look identical. For the 1.2 TSI 86 and 105 hp (CBZA, CBZB, CBZC), the code stamped on the block remains the only reliable criterion for avoiding a reference error. The vehicle model alone is not enough: checking the engine code before ordering is essential, particularly on the Ibiza and Toledo where several generations overlap.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

The turbos on this page are new. Each product page states the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your SEAT.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

No. The turbos on this page are new and sold as a straight sale: nothing to send back, your old turbo stays with you and there is one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my SEAT?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
