Dacia gearboxes have changed significantly between 2004 and today

The Dacia range spans more than twenty years of production, and the gearbox has not remained the same from one generation to the next. In 2004, the Logan arrived with mechanicals derived from Renault — K7M and K4M for petrol, K9K for diesel — and 5-speed gearboxes as standard across almost the entire range. With the arrival of the Duster in 2010, followed by the Lodgy and the Dokker, and then the TCe generations (H4B, H5F, H4M), the catalogue expanded to include 6-speed gearboxes. Identifying the correct part therefore requires pinpointing the vehicle precisely within its production timeline.

Sandero, Duster, Logan, Lodgy, Dokker: the identification pitfalls by model

The Sandero features the widest variety of configurations: from the D4F (1.2 naturally aspirated) through to the H5F TCe 90/100 and including the K9K diesel in several variants (K9K856, K9K858, K9K874, K9K894, K9K898…), each version may come with a different gearbox. The 1.5 dCi is a prime example of this pitfall: a single commercial designation covers several K9K engine codes whose associated gearboxes — of the JR5 or TL4 / TL8 type — are not interchangeable with one another. The Duster adds the variable of 4x4 four-wheel drive, which determines the gearbox choice independently of the engine code. On the Lodgy and Dokker, the 1.5 dCi engine dominates, but the year of production remains critical for matching the correct gearbox ratio. The Logan, in the version covered here, relies primarily on the K7M and K4M engines with a 5-speed gearbox.

Engine codes and gearbox families: what the commercial designation doesn't tell you

Across the entire Dacia range, the power output designation (100 hp, 115 hp, 90 hp…) is not sufficient to identify the gearbox. The engine code stamped on the manufacturer's plate — H4B400, H4BB4, H5F402, H5F404, H5F408, H5F410, H4Bt400, K4M606, K4M690, B4D, H4D or one of the K9K variants — is the only reliable starting point. The reconditioned gearboxes available on an exchange basis cover all of these engine codes, in both 5- and 6-speed versions, petrol and diesel, from the 2004 model year through to the most recent versions.
