The Opel engine code is the only reliable way to identify the correct reconditioned engine

On Opel vehicles, the engine capacity shown on the registration document is not enough: the same 1.4 Turbo can conceal a A14XER (LDD), an A14XEL (L2Z) or a B14NEJ (LUJ), three distinct units that are not interchangeable. The correct approach always starts with the engine code stamped on the side or top of the block, often accompanied by its commercial equivalent in brackets — for example Z12XE, A12XER (LDC) or B12XHT (EB2DTS) for the 1.2 petrol engines, or Z17DTJ, Z17DTR, A17DTR for the 1.7 CDTi depending on the engine generation, not the vehicle's year of manufacture.

Diesel CDTi: code families and key points to watch

The Opel diesel range spans several clearly distinct families. The 1.9 CDTi and 2.0 CDTi are based on in-house GM blocks (Y22DTR / L50, A20DTH / LBS, A20DTJ / LBX, A20DTR / LBY), found notably on the Astra, Insignia and Zafira. The 1.3 CDTi units are Fiat-GM blocks (D16DTH / LVL, B16DTH / LVL). On the Vivaro and Movano, the engines are Renault units: M9R 7M7, M9R 7E7 and M9R 788 for the 2.3 CDTi, while the 2.2 D and 2.2 D 120 belong to an earlier family. At the larger-displacement end, the 3.0 CDTi in the Movano shares its base with the DW12RUD (4HB) and DW12RUE (4HK), PSA-Renault blocks. Mixing up these families when ordering is the most common mistake.

Petrol: from the Adam to the Grandland, the codes that point you in the right direction

Petrol engines range from 1.2 to 1.6 across the Corsa, Astra, Meriva, Mokka and Adam. The 1.4 Turbo B14NEJ (LUJ) fits more recent generations of the Corsa and Mokka, whilst the X16XEL and A16XER are fitted to earlier-generation Astra and Zafira models. The 1.4 EB2ADT (HNK) is a PSA block shared with Peugeot-Citroën, found on certain Crossland and Grandland models. For the models covered by 1998 à 2025, the engine code remains the only reliable identifier: two vehicles of the same year and trim level can carry different blocks depending on the destination market or a mid-series revision. All engines are available as a bare engine on an exchange basis.
