Renault has renewed its engine blocks three times in twenty-five years, and each generation requires a different part

From 1997 to 2024, the Renault range went through several major technical shifts. The earliest diesel engines available here date back to the F8Q and G9T blocks of the 2000s — 1.9 D and 2.2 dCi engines fitted to the first- and second-generation Laguna, Mégane and Espace. The 2005–2015 decade saw the bulk of volume shift to the K9K family (1.5 dCi, available as K9K 646, 834, 837, 872…) and the M9T / G9U (2.3 dCi and 2.5 dCi) in the Master, Trafic and Kangoo light commercials. From 2012 onwards, the R9M (1.6 dCi) and M9R (2.0 dCi) blocks have been fitted to the Scénic, Laguna III and Kadjar, while on the petrol side the H4B, H5F and H5H cover the 0.9 TCe, 1.2 TCe and 1.3 TCe engines found in the Clio, Captur and Mégane IV.

The K9K trap: one code, multiple power variants

The K9K family is the most common in our catalogue, but also the most deceptive. A Kangoo 1.5 dCi 70 hp, a Scénic 1.5 dCi 110 hp and a Clio 1.5 dCi 90 hp all share the same engine capacity yet receive blocks built to different specifications — cylinder head, crankshaft, compression ratio. The suffix of the engine code (K9K 646, K9K 834, K9K 872…) is the only reliable identifier; the power figure shown on the registration document is not sufficient. The same logic applies to the M9T variants found in the Master and Trafic: M9T 670, M9T 680, M9T 706, M9T 710 and M9T 726 correspond to distinct power outputs and model years, with internal differences that make them non-interchangeable.

Common symptoms by engine family

On the K9K blocks, timing gear wear and turbo failures are the most common causes of engine damage, particularly on vehicles used heavily in urban conditions. The G9T and G9U (2.2 and 2.5 dCi commercial engines) are prone to head gasket failure and block cracking on high-mileage examples. The H5F and H5H (TCe petrol) blocks have a known issue with abnormal oil consumption on certain production runs, which is often a sign of premature piston ring wear. All engines listed here are bare engines, supplied without ancillaries (turbo, injectors, starter motor, alternator).
