Automated manual gearbox for city cars or manual for heavy commercials: two gearbox philosophies at Fiat

A Ducato working through back-to-back loads, a 500 navigating town with the Dualogic, a Doblo in mixed use, a Punto driven daily by a young motorist: under the Fiat badge coexist vehicles with radically different demands, and in each case the gearbox absorbs very different stresses. The manual Ducato endures repeated stop-start cycles under load, while the Dualogic automated gearbox fitted to small city cars suffers from intensive urban use that puts the actuator under constant strain. Understanding this difference is the first thing to consider before looking for a replacement part.

Gearbox families and identification pitfalls by model

The range covers nineteen models, from 1985 to 2024. The highest volumes relate to the Ducato, the 500, the Doblo and the Panda. Three gearbox families stand out: 5- or 6-speed manuals (Ducato, Scudo, Talento, Tipo, Bravo), the Dualogic — a single-clutch automated manual gearbox fitted to the 500, Panda and Punto — and the DDCT (dual-clutch), which is less common in the range. The Dualogic is sold without the actuator robot, which is a separate part. Depending on the generation, the Ducato is fitted with manual gearboxes paired with either the 2.3 Multijet engine (codes F1AE0481D, F1AE3481D, F1AGL411D) or the 3.0 Multijet (codes F1CE0481D, F1CE3481E): these two engine families do not take the same gearboxes, and mix-ups at the identification stage are common on post-2006 generations.

    Engine codes: the decisive checkpoint

The 1.3 Multijet illustrates just how complex the Fiat parc is: this engine is fitted to the 500, the Doblo, the Fiorino and even the Sedici, with distinct engine codes depending on the generation and model — 169A1000, 188A9000, 199A2000, 199B1000, 199B4000, 263A2000, 330A1000 in particular. Each code corresponds to a specific gearbox; the registration year alone is not enough to identify it. The same logic applies to the 1.2 petrol engine, found from the Seicento through to the first-generation Panda, with several codes (169A4000, 188A4000, 188A5000, 199A4000) that are not interchangeable. The 0.9 TwinAir (codes 199B6000, 312A2000, 312A5000) takes a specific reconditioned gearbox, distinct from that of the 1.2 despite the apparently similar engine capacity. Checking the engine code stamped on the block remains the only reliable method before placing any order.

    Frequently asked questions

How much does a reconditioned Fiat gearbox cost?

The price depends on the engine and the exact reference, and is always well below the price of a new part. For an exact price for your vehicle, enter your number plate or request a free online quote.

Is this Fiat gearbox compatible with my exact model?

We offer 244 references covering the main Fiat models. Compatibility is checked against the engine / gearbox code: give us your number plate and we will confirm the exact gearbox for your vehicle.

What is the difference between new, used and exchange?

A used part is resold as is, with no work done. An exchange unit is an original gearbox reconditioned in our workshop, inspected and guaranteed for up to 24 months: reliability close to new, at a used-part price.

What do the warranty and delivery include?

A warranty of up to 24 months, an invoice with every part, return transport arranged for collecting your old unit, delivery throughout Europe and payment in up to 10 instalments.
