13 Ford models affected by turbo failures with well-documented symptoms

On Ford diesel models — the Transit leading the way with 21 configurations, but also the Focus, Mondeo, Galaxy and Ranger — the turbo rarely fails without warning signs. The TDCi families (1.6, 1.8, 2.0, 2.2, 3.2) and EcoBlue share well-known weak points: oil circuit fouling on high-demand engines (Transit vans, long-distance Galaxy and S-Max), premature bearing wear on the variable-geometry turbos of the 2.0 TDCi and 2.2 TDCi, and turbine seal leaks resulting in blue smoke under acceleration. On EcoBoost versions (1.5, 1.6, 2.0, 2.3), failure is often linked to degraded oil or an overdue service interval: the bearings suffer as soon as lubrication weakens, with a characteristic whistling under load as the first sign.

Identifying the faulty turbo precisely: the pitfall of Ford engine codes

Ford uses a system of engine codes stamped on the block — not the engine capacity or the quoted power output — to distinguish between variants. The 2.0 EcoBlue illustrates this perfectly: the codes BCFA, BCFB, BJFA, BKFA, BLFA, YLFA, YMFA, YNFA (among others) refer to 2.0 EcoBlue or 2.0 EcoBlue mHEV engines that may share the same engine capacity but do not necessarily take the same turbo reference. Likewise, the 2.2 TDCi covers a wide power range (85 to 155 hp depending on the generation) with codes ranging from CYFA to DRFE, including SRFA, UHFA: a mix-up in engine code can lead to ordering an incompatible turbo despite an identical engine capacity. The engine code is therefore the only reliable starting point for identifying the correct manufacturer reference.

Address the root cause before replacement

Replacing the turbo without eliminating the root cause of the original failure will invariably result in another breakdown. On Ford diesel models with variable geometry (2.0 TDCi, 2.2 TDCi, EcoBlue), the condition of the EGR and DPF must be checked: heavy fouling degrades oil quality and accelerates bearing wear on the new turbo. On EcoBoost models, checking the lubrication circuit — oil quality and pressure, condition of the turbo feed pipe — is essential before any reassembly. A foreign body drawn in (a deteriorated hose seal or a faulty air filter) remains the most destructive mechanical cause of CHRA failure.

The turbos listed on this page are new parts, available for 13 Ford models across the diesel and petrol ranges. Each product page shows the manufacturer reference and applicable equivalent references: it is from this information, cross-referenced with your vehicle's engine code, that compatibility must be confirmed.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

It depends on the reference: each product page states whether the turbo is new (straight sale, nothing to send back) or reconditioned (exchange basis), together with the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your Ford.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

Only for a reconditioned turbo, sold on an exchange basis: you return your old turbo after the new one has been delivered and fitted, and we arrange the collection. A new turbo is a straight sale: nothing to send back, one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my Ford?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
