SEAT Gearboxes: from the ubiquitous manual before 2010 to the DSG dual-clutch after

Until the early 2010s, virtually every SEAT — Leon, Ibiza, Altea, Toledo, Cordoba — came with a manual gearbox. Since then, the range has split into three distinct families: 5- or 6-speed manuals, DSG 6 and DSG 7. These two dual-clutch gearboxes, inherited from the VAG platform, are not interchangeable: the DSG 6 (DQ250) is fitted primarily to high-torque diesel engines such as the 2.0 TDI, while the DSG 7 (DQ200) is found on smaller-capacity petrol and diesel units — 1.2 TSI, 1.4 TSI, 1.0 TSI, 1.6 TDI. The gearbox type cannot be determined from engine capacity alone: a 1.4 TSI may come with either a manual or a DSG 7 depending on the model year and trim level.

Leon and Ibiza account for the bulk of the range, but identification remains tricky

Leon and Ibiza make up the vast majority of the gearboxes available in this collection. Across these two models, several engine codes exist for the same stated engine capacity: the 1.2, for example, covers codes CBZA, CBZB, CHZ which do not share the same gearbox. Likewise, the 1.9 TDI (codes ATD, AXR, ASZ) found on early-generation Leon and Toledo models takes specific manual gearboxes that differ from those fitted to the 1.6 TDI or 2.0 TDI introduced later. The engine code stamped on the block — not the commercial designation — is the only reliable reference for matching the correct gearbox.

Reconditioned DSG and manual gearboxes: two different technical approaches

The SEAT manual gearboxes in this collection span 1998 to 2024 and cover every model in the catalogue, including less common ones such as the Exeo and the Arona. The reconditioned DSG 6 and DSG 7 units are supplied without the mechatronic unit: this electronic component is handled separately and is never included with the gearbox. Both available sales options — exchange and rebuild of your own unit — apply across the entire range; the latter is particularly suited when the gearbox has an unusual service history or a reference that is difficult to source on a straight exchange basis.
