Which Audi turbo for your engine generation: 1.9 TDI, 2.0 TFSI or 3.0 TDI?

The Audi range has gone through several major technical shifts that make identifying the correct turbo particularly tricky. The 1.9 TDI (engine code CAHA, among others) was fitted to the early generations of the A3 and A4 with a variable-vane geometry, and was gradually replaced by the 2.0 TDI in its 170 hp, then 184 and 190 hp variants — three power outputs that do not share the same turbo, even though the engine capacity is identical. On the petrol side, the 1.8 T with a wastegate gave way to the 2.0 TFSI (codes CAEB, CDNC, CJSA, CJSB…), itself available in several variants depending on power output and year, with distinct manufacturer references for each stage.

The identification pitfalls specific to Audi turbos

On the 3.0 TDI — fitted to the A4, A5, A6, Q5 and Q7 — Audi used several different turbos depending on power output (211, 240, 272 hp) and drivetrain (quattro or otherwise): references 03L145701 and 03L145702 cover a large number of suffixes (A, C, E, J, N…) corresponding to non-interchangeable variants. Likewise, the 2.0 TFSI in the A3, TT or Q3 may take either a fixed-geometry or a variable-geometry turbo depending on the exact engine code stamped on the block — CDNB, CDNC and CNCB do not share the same references. For the 1.2 TFSI in the A1 (86 hp or 105 hp), the two power outputs correspond to different turbos despite an identical engine capacity.

Common symptoms and root causes to address before replacement

On Audi TDI engines with variable geometry, vane fouling causes a gradual loss of power and triggers limp mode, which can easily be mistaken for an EGR or DPF fault. On the TFSI side, turbos frequently suffer from insufficient lubrication caused by extended oil change intervals or degraded oil: whistling under acceleration and blue smoke on start-up are the tell-tale signs. Addressing the root cause (oil quality, intake hose integrity, DPF condition) is essential before fitting a reconditioned or new turbo — otherwise the replacement unit will suffer the same damage in the same timeframe. Depending on the reference, the turbos in this collection are available new (outright sale) or reconditioned; the engine code and manufacturer reference remain the only reliable means of selecting the correct part from the 25 engine codes covered, from the A1 to the Q8.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

It depends on the reference: each product page states whether the turbo is new (straight sale, nothing to send back) or reconditioned (exchange basis), together with the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your Audi.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

Only for a reconditioned turbo, sold on an exchange basis: you return your old turbo after the new one has been delivered and fitted, and we arrange the collection. A new turbo is a straight sale: nothing to send back, one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my Audi?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
