Golf petrol and diesel: from the 4-speed manual of the first generations to the 7-speed DSG of the modern TSI and TDI units — forty years of transmissions to untangle

The Golf spans four decades of production, from 1983 to 2024, and that longevity translates into a transmission range that is anything but uniform. On the petrol side, the older naturally aspirated units — 1.3, 1.4, 1.6, 1.8, 2.0, 2.3, 2.8, 2.9 — were paired exclusively with manual gearboxes, from the 4-speed on the 1.3 (codes 2G, MH, NZ) through to the 5- and 6-speed manuals on the VR6 and 2.8. The arrival of the turbocharged TSI units changed everything: the 1.2 TSI, 1.4 TSI, 1.5 TSI, 1.8 TSI and 2.0 TSI all opened the door to the DSG, in 6 or 7 speeds depending on the engine code. On the diesel side, the 5-speed manual dominated until the early 2000s on the 1.9 TDI and 1.9 SDI, before the DSG 6 and DSG 7 gradually took over on the 2.0 TDI and 1.6 TDI.

DSG 6 or DSG 7: a distinction that depends on the engine code, not the engine capacity

For engines that accept both the DSG and the manual, it is the engine code stamped on the block — not the engine capacity alone — that determines the exact type of gearbox. The 2.0 TSI receives, depending on the code (CCZA, CCZB, CHHB, CJXC) either a DSG 6, a DSG 7, or a 6-speed manual. The 1.4 TSI (BLG, BMY, CAVD, CAXA, CPTA, CXSA, CZCA, CZEA) is available with a 6-speed manual or a DSG 7. The 2.0 TDI (AZV, BKD, BMM, BMN, CBAB, CFFB, CFGB, CFHC, CRBC, CRLB, CRMB, DCYA, DFGA) can be fitted with a 5-speed manual, a 6-speed manual, a DSG 6 or a DSG 7. Two vehicles showing the same engine on paper can therefore carry structurally different gearboxes that are not interchangeable.

Key points to check when identifying your gearbox

The DSG 7 (dry dual-clutch gearbox) is supplied without the mechatronic unit; the mechatronic unit is a separate electrohydraulic component and is not included in the reconditioned gearbox. For engines fitted with the DSG 6 (wet dual-clutch), the same rule applies: the gearbox is supplied with a new dual-clutch, mechatronic unit excluded. For older engines with a manual gearbox, the point to watch is different: the 1.6 (BGU, BSE, BSF, CMXA) can be fitted with either a 5- or 6-speed gearbox, and the 1.9 TDI (ASZ, ATD, AXR, BKC, BLS, BXE) went through several gearbox families over its production run. Checking the engine code before placing any order remains the only way to avoid a reference error. EDEN BOITES offers two purchasing options within this range: a reconditioned replacement unit supplied in exchange for your old one, and a rebuild of your own unit, which is then returned to you.

    Frequently asked questions

Is a gearbox for this Volkswagen model in stock?

We currently list 259 references reconditioned for this model. Availability depends on the exact engine: enter your number plate to confirm stock in real time, or request an online quote.

How can I be sure it is compatible with my Volkswagen?

Compatibility depends on the engine / gearbox code, not just the model. The most reliable way is your number plate or registration document: our advisers confirm the right gearbox for your vehicle before you order.

Do I need to send back my old unit?

Yes, that is the principle of an exchange unit: you return your old gearbox (the core), which we recondition in turn. We arrange transport both ways, so you don't have to handle any logistics.

How long does it take to receive the gearbox for my Volkswagen?

Once compatibility is confirmed and depending on the availability of the reference, the part leaves our workshop ready to fit, delivered throughout France and Europe, with payment in instalments available (up to 10 payments).
