The 1.2 TSI in the Golf (2009–2017) does not come with a single gearbox: depending on the engine code and the generation of the vehicle, it can be paired with a 5-speed manual, a 6-speed manual or a DSG 7. These three configurations are not interchangeable: a unit from a vehicle fitted with engine code CBZA is not compatible with a CJZA, even if the engine capacity is identical. Accurately identifying the engine code stamped on the block is the essential first step before searching for any reference.

What each type of gearbox means for this engine

The 5-speed manuals are found mainly on the earliest production years (CBZA, CBZB), in entry-level, lower-powered versions. The 6-speed manual corresponds to slightly more powerful variants or more recent model years. The dry dual-clutch DSG 7 (DQ200) is fitted to the automated versions: it is supplied without the mechatronic unit, with a new dual-clutch included. This gearbox is well known for juddering in slow urban driving – a symptom frequently linked to the mechatronic unit or a worn dual-clutch. These are two distinct issues to investigate before deciding which part needs replacing.

Finding the correct reference for the 1.2 TSI

The references available for this engine (LNY, MYF, NBX, NHW, PKH, PRL, PTB, RGN, RKC, RES) cover all three gearbox families. The same production year may correspond to two different references depending on the engine code selected at the factory. Checking the engine code (CBZA, CBZB or CJZA) as well as the reference stamped on the gearbox casing remains the most reliable method to avoid any ordering errors.
