CAYB, CAYC, CLHA, CRKB: each 1.6 TDI Golf engine code corresponds to a different gearbox

On the Golf 1.6 TDI produced from 2009 to 2020, four engine codes exist and none is interchangeable with another at transmission level.CAYB and CAYC (105 hp, Golf VI, 2009–2013) are paired with either a 5-speed manual or a 7-speed DSG depending on the trim level originally specified.CLHA (105 hp, Golf VII, 2012–2016) moves to a 6-speed manual, with longer gear ratios introduced to meet emissions standards.CRKB (110 hp, Golf VII facelift, 2017–2020) retains the same 6-speed architecture but with different output shaft dimensions: a gearbox from a CLHA cannot be mechanically substituted for a CRKB without checking the mounting dimensions and differential.

7-speed DSG on the 1.6 TDI: CAYB and CAYC only

The dry-clutch 7-speed DSG (DQ200 type) was only offered with this engine on the Golf VI, exclusively with the CAYB and CAYC engine codes. It is not fitted as standard with CLHA or CRKB configurations. The DSG 7 is supplied without the mechatronic unit, with a new dual-clutch. The DQ200 family is known for juddering at low-speed manoeuvres and overheating in heavy urban traffic: symptoms often wrongly attributed to the gearbox mechanics, when in fact they stem from the mechatronic unit — a component not supplied here.

Identifying your gearbox: engine code first, gearbox plate second

The vehicle's year is a guide, but not sufficient on its own: a 2013 Golf VII may carry a CAYC or a CLHA depending on the exact production date. The engine code, visible on the block on the gearbox side or on the V5C registration document (section P5), is the starting point. The gearbox manufacturer's plate then confirms the exact reference among codes such as QYB, PMZ, MWW or RTD found in this collection.
