Golf 2.8 VR6: a 5-speed manual before 1996, then a 6-speed to handle the torque of an engine built for open-road driving

The 2.8 VR6 was never fitted to an ordinary city car. Installed in Golf models intended for sustained road use — long journeys, frequent overtaking, spirited driving — this narrow-angle six-cylinder produces high torque at low revs, placing very different demands on the transmission compared with a turbocharged four-cylinder. Over the miles, the synchromesh rings absorb repeated gear changes under load, and that is typically where failure sets in: stiff changes, or first and second gear refusing to engage when cold.

Engine code AAA and two gearbox families

The only engine code listed for this engine is AAA. Depending on the generation of the vehicle, this engine is paired with either a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed manual. References GQV, GQT, FMP, CHN, CCM and AGK cover these two distinct families; they are not interchangeable between generations. Before ordering, the gearbox code stamped on the side casing is the only reliable way to remove any ambiguity, regardless of the year shown on the registration document.
