Between 1997 and 2004, the Golf 1.8 petrol — spanning the end of the Mk3 and the bulk of the Mk4 — had just one transmission family: the 5-speed manual. No DSG, no automatic within this scope. The key dividing line is therefore not the model year but the engine code stamped on the block: AGN (naturally aspirated, 125 hp, available from 1997) and AGU (turbocharged, 150 hp, 20V). These two units share the same engine capacity and the same external architecture, but their bellhousings, final drive ratios and internal references differ. References ATH, ACD, CHD, CHB, AYC or 2A are not distributed at random: each one corresponds to a specific engine code and a precise production period.

Common symptoms and the critical identification point

On these 5-speed manuals, difficulty engaging 3rd and 4th gear is the most frequently reported symptom on high-mileage examples, sometimes accompanied by bearing noise on overrun. To identify the correct compatible gearbox, the engine code alone is not always sufficient: the reference stamped on the gearbox casing (short formats such as 2Y, AUG or DFP) remains the most reliable guide to avoid an ordering error between an AGN and an AGU of the same model year.
