Golf 1.9 TDI: from the 5-speed manual of the 1997–2003 years to the DSG 6 and DSG 7 of the final production run, four gearbox types for a single engine

Between 1997 and 2010, the 1.9 TDI was fitted to several generations of Golf with very different transmissions depending on the generation, power output and date of manufacture. Identifying the correct family — 5- or 6-speed manual, DSG 6, DSG 7 — requires cross-referencing the engine code with the year and variant. The codes ATD, AXR, BKC, BXE correspond to entry-level or mid-range manual variants, whilst ASZ and BLS are found on higher-powered versions, sometimes paired with a DSG. The same model year can therefore accommodate structurally incompatible gearboxes.

When the original unit remains the key factor

Within this range, only the exchange basis is available. Rebuilding the customer's own unit is not offered here, which means the returned unit must be identifiable and in a condition suitable for acceptance. The DSG gearboxes in this collection are supplied without the mechatronic unit, with a new dual-clutch: this is an important point to check before placing any order, particularly for late Golf IV and Golf V versions fitted with the 1.9 TDI in DSG 6.

Key points to watch with the 1.9 TDI in manual transmission

The 5-speed manual gearboxes associated with the codes ATD and AXR (Golf IV, production up to approximately 2004) are known for wear to the 2nd and 3rd synchromesh rings, accelerated by heavy urban use. The references EUH, DFW, JYJ, JWN are among the gearboxes covered by this range. The 6-speed manuals appear mainly on the Golf V from 2004–2005 onwards with the BKC and BXE codes. Cross-referencing the engine code stamped on the block with the date of first registration remains the most reliable identification method to avoid any selection errors.
