Golf 1.4 petrol: four distinct engine codes for a single engine capacity, four gearboxes that cannot be substituted for one another

The trap with the Golf 1.4 is a specific one: engine capacity tells you nothing about the gearbox. Between 1997 and 2014, this engine was produced under four different codes — AXP, BCA, BUD and CGGA — and each code corresponds to a specific 5-speed manual gearbox. Two Golf 1.4s from different generations, even with the same quoted power output, may have transmissions whose bellhousings, shafts and gear ratios are mutually incompatible. Ordering without checking the engine code risks ending up with an unusable part.

Check the engine code before any other criterion

On the Golf 1.4, the engine code is the only decisive piece of information for identifying the correct gearbox. It is stamped on the block, generally on the gearbox side, and is distinct from the gearbox reference itself — visible on the transmission casing. The gearbox references listed on this page (LEG, LVP, KQL, JHU, GJC, FXQ, DUW, DUV, DUU, DNZ among others) cover the full 1997–2014 range, but each is indexed to one or more specific engine codes. A reference from an AXP will not fit a CGGA, even though both engines displace 1 390 cm³.
