Toyota diesel turbos rarely fail through wear — almost always through lack of lubrication or carbon build-up

Across the Toyota range, D-4D and D-CAT engines have a well-earned reputation for reliability, yet their turbos display clearly identifiable failure patterns. The 1KD-FTV (3.0 D-4D, Land Cruiser, Hilux, Hiace) and the 2KD-FTV (2.5 D-4D) are the most vulnerable: degraded oil or a partially blocked lubrication circuit is enough to destroy the CHRA bearings. On the 2AD-FTV and 2AD-FHV engines (2.2 D-4D and 2.2 D-CAT, Avensis, Auris, RAV4, Verso), the variable geometry is a frequent source of seizure, made worse by EGR or DPF fouling. The symptoms are classic: abnormal whistling under acceleration, blue or black exhaust smoke, a marked loss of power, and sometimes the engine entering limp mode. On the 1CD-FTV (2.0 D-4D, Corolla, Avensis), oil-circuit sealing issues upstream of the turbo are well documented. Before any replacement, diagnosing and addressing the root cause — lubrication, EGR, DPF — is essential; failing to do so risks destroying the new or reconditioned unit just as quickly.

Finding the correct reference: a tricky exercise on Toyota

Toyota uses its own manufacturer references (format 172XX-XXXXX) as well as internal codes such as VB13, VB14, VB17, VB31, VB40, VB42 for the variable-geometry turbos fitted to the 2AD and 1KD. The same engine can take several different turbos depending on power output or model generation: the 2.5 D-4D is available in 102, 120 and 144 hp versions on the Hilux and Land Cruiser, the 2.2 D-4D in 136 and 150 hp, and the D-CAT 177 hp version uses a different turbo despite sharing the same base engine code. The 1.4 D-4D 1ND-TV (Corolla, Auris) is in fact built around a PSA-origin block (8HS / DV4TED), as are the Aygo and Proace, which carry PSA engine codes (EB2ADT, EB2ADTS, F6JA, F6JB, F6JD): the engine code stamped on the block is what matters, not simply the model name or engine capacity.

New and reconditioned turbos: two options depending on the reference

Depending on the reference, the turbos listed are available either new or reconditioned. Reconditioned turbos are sold on an exchange basis; new turbos are sold outright. The collection covers thirteen Toyota models — from the Yaris to the Land Cruiser 4.5 D V8 (1VD-FTV) — with new or reconditioned turbos available according to the reference. The C-HR 1.2 Turbo (8NR-FTS, petrol) is also covered; this direct-injection engine is particularly sensitive to oil quality and to foreign bodies entering the intake circuit.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

It depends on the reference: each product page states whether the turbo is new (straight sale, nothing to send back) or reconditioned (exchange basis), together with the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your Toyota.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

Only for a reconditioned turbo, sold on an exchange basis: you return your old turbo after the new one has been delivered and fitted, and we arrange the collection. A new turbo is a straight sale: nothing to send back, one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my Toyota?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
