Mitsubishi parts changed significantly between 1999 and 2021: the original 4D56 is a very different engine from the 4D56-HP found in more recent generations

Over more than two decades, the Mitsubishi range underwent several major technical shifts. The 4D56 powers the 2.5 TD and 2.5 DI-D across successive generations of the L200 and Pajero, but its variants — 4D56T, 4D56HP, 4D56-HP, 4D5CDI — represent mechanically distinct states, with turbos, gearboxes and architectures that are not interchangeable. Confusing a pre-2006 4D56 with a 4D56-HP from the following phase is a common mistake, particularly on the L200, whose generations overlap heavily on the used market.

Turbos, gearboxes and transfer cases: three part families for a predominantly diesel fleet

The turbo is by far the most represented part in this collection — well ahead of gearboxes, engines and transfer cases. This breakdown reflects the reality of the fleet: the L200, Pajero and Outlander are overwhelmingly diesel-powered, and the turbo is typically the first component to fail. The 4M41 (3.2 DI-D, available in 160, 165 and 170 hp) and the 4N13 (1.8 DI-D, 116 or 150 hp) illustrate this clearly: a single engine family covers several power outputs, with different turbos depending on the exact variant. 5- and 6-speed manual gearboxes account for the bulk of the catalogue, complemented by two transfer cases for the 4x4 versions of the L200 and Pajero. The 4M40 (2.8 TD) and the 4N14 (2.2 DI-D) are distinct engine families whose parts do not cross over with those of other blocks, despite similar engine capacities.

Identifying the right part on a Mitsubishi: engine code takes priority over engine capacity

On an L200 or Pajero, stating '2.5 diesel' is not enough to identify the correct part: a 4D56, a 4D56T and a 4D56-HP all share the same engine capacity yet require different reconditioned turbos and gearboxes. The engine code stamped on the block — or shown on the vehicle registration document — is the essential starting point. For models spanning 1999 to 2021, the year of manufacture and the exact variant (for example, 3.2 DI-D 160 hp versus 3.2 DI-D 170 hp on the 4M41) help narrow down the identification.
