Mitsubishi: robust manual gearboxes or automatic transmissions — two very different approaches

Within the Mitsubishi collection, the vast majority of parts are manual gearboxes — in 5 or 6 speeds depending on the model and engine — and they serve very different purposes: the L200 and Pajero are fitted with gearboxes designed for off-road traction and heavy loads, whereas the Outlander, ASX and Colt are built for predominantly road use. This distinction directly determines which reference is compatible with your vehicle.

L200 and Pajero: why the engine code is critical for identification

The L200 alone accounts for the majority of available references, centred around the 4D56, 4D56T, 4D56-HP and 4M41 engines — all DI-D diesels, but spanning different generations and power outputs covering the years 1999 to 2021. A pre-2006 L200 2.5 DI-D does not take the same gearbox as a 2.5 DI-D from the next phase: the engine code stamped on the block is the only reliable starting point for avoiding a reference error. The same logic applies to the Pajero 3.2 DI-D (code 4M41) and 3.0 DI-D, where the gearbox varies by vehicle generation. The Canter (4P10, 4M42) and its transfer cases form a separate category, aimed at light commercial vehicles.

Outlander, ASX, Colt: lighter engines, petrol and diesel combined

The Outlander and ASX cover several diesel units (2.0 DI-D, 2.2 DI-D, 1.8 DI-D — codes 4N13, 4N14, 4N15) as well as petrol versions. The Colt appears with the 1.5 Turbo (4G15T) and the 1.8 (4G93). These engines are paired with lighter 5-speed manual gearboxes, bearing no relation to the heavy-duty transmissions found in the L200 or Pajero. The three bare engines available in the collection also fall within this segment. For parts available as a rebuild of your own unit or on an exchange basis, the exact reference depends on the engine code and year of manufacture — two details to confirm before placing any order.
