The 4D56 — in its 4D56T, 4D56-HP and 4D5CDI variants — was fitted to the L200 and Pajero from the late 1990s through to the mid-2010s, first as a 2.5 TD and then as a 2.5 DI-D, though its variants are not identical from one generation to the next: the HP version differs structurally from the base version. The 4M41 succeeded it on the 3.2 DI-D of the Pajero and L200, producing 160, 165 and then 170 hp depending on the model year. The 4M40 in 2.8 TD represents an even earlier generation, entirely distinct from all those that followed.

Turbos, gearboxes and transfer cases: where demand is concentrated

References such as 49177-02702 or 49177-02513 correspond to precise engine configurations and model years: confusing a first-generation 4D56 turbo with that of a 4D56-HP is a common mistake that leads to an incompatible fitment. Manual gearboxes cover the L200, Pajero and Outlander, with differences depending on whether the vehicle is rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. Transfer cases apply exclusively to 4x4 versions, particularly on the Pajero and L200.

Engines and codes: the critical identification points

The bare engines available in this catalogue cover both petrol and diesel units, including the 4G69 (2.4 MIVEC) and the 4N13 (1.8 DI-D), the latter fitted to the ASX and Outlander at either 116 or 150 hp — two power outputs sharing the same engine code, which makes it essential to confirm the exact power output before placing any order. The 4N14 (2.2 DI-D) and the 4N15 (2.4 DI-D) are more recent units, found on post-2010 model years. The engine code stamped on the block remains the only reliable reference point for navigating this timeline: model name and engine capacity alone are not sufficient.
