Five families of automated manual gearboxes across the Citroën range: why this is the first pitfall to avoid

On Citroën vehicles, gearbox failure follows well-documented patterns. The SensoDrive — a 5-speed automated manual gearbox fitted notably to the C2 and C3 — is well known for juddering during engagement and deterioration of its electrohydraulic actuator, a problem made worse by intensive urban driving. The BMP6 (6-speed automated manual, C3, C4 Cactus, DS3) displays similar symptoms: hesitation during gear changes and selection errors, often wrongly attributed to the actuator when the mechanical gearbox itself may be at fault. The ETG6 and the BMP5 complete the picture. In total, five distinct families of automated or automated manual gearboxes coexist across the Citroën range covered here, each with its own fault codes and its own wear tolerance thresholds. Mixing up the families — or selecting a gearbox from the wrong engine code range — will invariably lead to a compatibility issue.

HDi: engine codes make all the difference on the C3, C4 and Jumper

The 1.6 HDi perfectly illustrates the identification pitfall across this range: codes 9HX, 9HZ, 9HW, 9HP, 9HF, 9HU, 9HM, 9HH correspond to different power outputs and emissions variants, not all of which accept the same gearbox. A 9HX and a 9HZ can both be fitted to two C3s of the same year yet require gearboxes that are incompatible with each other. With the 2.0 HDi (codes RHR, RHF, FHZ), the situation is similar: the associated gearbox depends on the engine torque and the vehicle generation. For light commercial vehicles — Jumper, Jumpy, Berlingo — codes F1CE0481D, F1CE3481E, 4HV (2.2 and 3.0 HDi) require specific 6-speed gearboxes matched to the size and torque of these vehicles, with no possible substitution using saloon references.

Petrol PureTech and older engines: two distinct replacement approaches

The 1.2 PureTech (codes HMZ, HNZ, HNY) is fitted to the C3, C4 Cactus and DS3 with either a 5- or 6-speed manual gearbox depending on the stated power output — 82, 110 or 130 hp — and the year of production. At the other end of the spectrum, older engines 1.4 (6FZ, 8FP), 1.6 (YH01) and the 1.9 HDi diesel units found on the Xsara and Saxo (years from 1987 in this catalogue) fall under 5-speed manual references for which availability as reconditioned units is more limited. The rebuild of your own unit option comes into its own here for the oldest or rarest references, when exchange stock has been exhausted.
