City car or heavy commercial: two uses, two demands on the Nissan gearbox

A Micra 1.0 in urban traffic and a fully laden NV400 2.3 dCi on the motorway do not put the same demands on their gearbox. The first strings together short gear changes and repeated starts; the second sustains high torque over long periods. This diversity of use is precisely what makes identifying the right Nissan gearbox so tricky: the range spans city cars such as the Micra and the Juke, family SUVs such as the Qashqai and the X-Trail, light commercial vehicles such as the NV400, the Primastar and the Cabstar, and more heavy-duty vehicles such as the Patrol, the Navara and the Pathfinder. Each segment has its own gearbox families, its own engine codes, and its own weak points.

5-speed manual, 6-speed manual or Quickshift: the families not to mix up

Three types of gearbox are featured in this collection: 5-speed manual, 6-speed manual and Quickshift (an automated manual 5-speed used on certain versions of the Micra, among others). The Quickshift is sold without its automated actuator. On the Qashqai — the model most represented here with seventeen references — the 1.5 dCi and 2.0 dCi diesel engines correspond to different gearboxes depending on the generation and engine code: K9K282, K9K430 or K9K636 for the 1.5 dCi, M9R692, M9R780 or M9R782 for the 2.0 dCi. The same engine capacity can therefore take several distinct references depending on the year of production and the power output. The Juke 1.6 Turbo (code MR16DDT) and the Juke 1.2 Turbo (HR12DDT or HRA2DDT) do not share the same gearbox despite a similar architecture.

Commercial vehicles and working vehicles: the importance of the engine code

On the NV400 and the Primastar, the dominant engine is the 2.3 dCi available in several M9T codes: M9T670, M9T700, M9T702, M9T870, M9T890, M9T898. These variants correspond to different power outputs and torque figures, and the associated gearboxes are not always interchangeable between them. On the Cabstar and the NV200, the engine families change again. For the Navara and the Pathfinder, the 2.5 dCi (YD25DDTi) is the reference engine. The Patrol and the Terrano use older units — ZD30, ZD30DDTi, YD22DDT — covered here across a range going back to 1988, which means reconditioned gearboxes built on mechanical bases that can sometimes be difficult to source. In every case, the engine code stamped on the block remains the only reliable identifier for selecting the correct reference, whether for an exchange or for the rebuilding of your own unit.
