1.6 HDi and 1.6 BlueHDi: two closely related engines, two distinct blocks depending on the model and engine code

This is the most common pitfall across the Peugeot range: a 1.6 diesel fitted to a 308 from 2010 does not share the same block as a 1.6 fitted to a 308 from 2015, even where the power output is identical. The transition from the DV6FC (BHZ) to the DV5RC (YHZ) or DV5RUC (YHV) illustrates this generational shift: the engine capacity remains the same, the commercial designation stays "1.6 HDi" or "1.6 BlueHDi", yet the two engines are physically incompatible. Before placing any order, the engine code stamped on the block — not simply the engine capacity or the power figure quoted in the spec sheet — is the only reliable identifier.

Diesel, petrol, light commercials: very different engine families

The range covers sixteen models, from the 306 (from 1996) to the Rifter and the Boxer in more recent years. On the diesel side, three families dominate: the DW10 (2.0 HDi, found on the 307, 308, 407, 508, 5008, Expert…) with several engine code variants — AHK, AHW, AHP, AHN, EHT, EHZ depending on power output and emissions standard —, the DV6 (1.6 HDi, 9HM, BHZ…) and the DV5 (1.5 BlueHDi, YHZ, YHV), which are more recent. For the 2.2 HDi, the codes 4HU, 4HH, 4HK (DW12RUE) and 4HG (P22DTE) appear across the Boxer, Expert and 807: the same 2.2 HDi designation can therefore correspond to significantly different engine architectures. On the petrol side, the EB2 (1.2 PureTech, HMZ, HNZ, HNY, HNS) and the EP6 (1.6 THP/VTi, 5FV…) follow the same logic: a different engine code suffix indicates a revised generation or a distinct emissions level, with internal components that are not interchangeable.

Key points to watch out for across the range

The 1.2 PureTech (EB2 / EB0) is fitted to the 208 and 2008 as well as the 308 and Rifter, but the naturally aspirated variants (EB0, ZMZ) and turbocharged variants (EB2DT, EB2ADTS…) have nothing in common mechanically. On the light commercial side, the Expert and Boxer sometimes share references with Citroën or Fiat models from the same group, which increases the risk of confusion if you rely solely on the vehicle model without checking the engine code. All engines offered on an exchange basis on this page are reconditioned bare engines; ancillary components (turbo, fuel injection system, alternator) are not included and must be reused or replaced separately.
