Same 1.9 CDTi, two different gearboxes: why the engine code matters more than the engine capacity on Opel

On Opel vehicles, engine capacity alone is never enough to identify the correct gearbox. A Z19DT and a Z19DTH are both 1.9 CDTi units, yet their gearboxes are not interchangeable. The same applies to the 1.4: codes A14XEL, A14NET or B14NEL correspond to distinct gearboxes depending on whether the engine is naturally aspirated or turbocharged, and whether it is fitted to a Corsa or an Astra. The engine code stamped on the block — not the engine designation shown in the spec sheet — is the only reliable starting point for selecting the right part.

5- or 6-speed manual, Easytronic, Tecshift: four families across sixteen models

The range covers 5- and 6-speed manual gearboxes, the automated manual Easytronic (fitted to the Corsa, Meriva and Agila) and the Tecshift (Vivaro, Movano). These two automated manual gearboxes are sold without the actuator or robot unit: only the mechanical gearbox is supplied. The Vivaro accounts for the majority of references in the catalogue, principally around the codes G9U (2.5 CDTi) and M9T (2.3 CDTi), with suffix variants — G9U630, G9U650, G9U730 — that are not interchangeable with one another. The Movano shares some of these codes with the Renault Master of the same generation, which frequently leads to confusion when identifying the correct unit.

Key points to check by code family

On light commercial vehicles, the codes G9U and M9R (2.0 CDTi, fitted to the Vivaro from 2014 onwards) are often confused with one another: checking the model year and the exact suffix will prevent an incorrect choice. On compact and city cars (Astra, Corsa, Meriva, Zafira), codes within the Z1x / A1x family follow on from one generation to the next — Z13DT gives way to A13DTE, Z17DTH to A17DTR — and the associated gearboxes are not identical despite looking similar. On the 1.6 CDTi (Astra J and K, Mokka, Crossland), codes B16DTH, B16DTL and R9M coexist depending on the model year, and here again the gearboxes are not interchangeable. The EDEN BOITES range spans 1998 to 2024, with reconditioned gearboxes available — depending on the model — on an exchange basis or as a rebuild of the customer's own unit.

    Frequently asked questions

How much does a reconditioned Opel gearbox cost?

The price depends on the engine and the exact reference, and is always well below the price of a new part. For an exact price for your vehicle, enter your number plate or request a free online quote.

Is this Opel gearbox compatible with my exact model?

We offer 214 references covering the main Opel models. Compatibility is checked against the engine / gearbox code: give us your number plate and we will confirm the exact gearbox for your vehicle.

What is the difference between new, used and exchange?

A used part is resold as is, with no work done. An exchange unit is an original gearbox reconditioned in our workshop, inspected and guaranteed for up to 24 months: reliability close to new, at a used-part price.

What do the warranty and delivery include?

A warranty of up to 24 months, an invoice with every part, return transport arranged for collecting your old unit, delivery throughout Europe and payment in up to 10 instalments.
