Golf gearbox: from the 4-speed manual of the 1980s to the 7-speed DSG of recent generations – a transmission that has never stopped branching out

Between 1983 and 2024, the Golf passed through eight generations and accumulated more than twenty distinct engine variants, petrol and diesel alike. What changed most profoundly was the transmission: from a 4-speed manual on the 1.3 of the early years, the range progressed to DSG 6 and DSG 7 units on the most recent TSI and TDI engines, with an unbroken line of 5- and 6-speed manuals in between. Today, depending on the engine and the year of first registration, a Golf can be fitted with one of five distinct gearbox types.

Manuals: from the dominant 5-speed to the 6-speed imposed by torque

The 5-speed manual covers the bulk of the Golf fleet from the 1990s and 2000s — 1.6, 1.8, 1.9 TDI first generation, 2.0, 2.3, 2.9, 2.0 SDI, 1.9 SDI. It gradually gave way to the 6-speed manual as soon as torque increased: this is consistent across the 2.8, the 3.2 V6, and virtually all TSI and TDI engines from 2008 onwards. On the 1.6 TDI and 1.9 TDI, both gearbox ratios coexist depending on the vehicle generation: a 5-speed reference cannot be substituted for a 6-speed one, even if the engine capacity code is identical.

DSG 6 and DSG 7: which engine, and what to watch out for?

The DSG 6 (wet clutch) is fitted primarily to high-torque engines: 2.0 TSI, 2.0 TDI, 3.2, and the 2.0 TDI 184 hp, which accepts only this unit. The DSG 7 (dry clutch) is reserved for lower-torque engines: 1.4 TSI, 1.5 TSI, 1.6 TDI, 1.2 TSI. On the 1.9 TDI, both DSG generations exist depending on the year. One technical point to bear in mind: reconditioned DSG units are supplied without the mechatronic unit but with a new dual-clutch assembly included — a faulty mechatronic unit must be dealt with separately. Finally, two reconditioning options are available within this range: exchange on a rebuilt unit, or the rebuilding of your own gearbox, which is returned to you after overhaul — this can be decisive when the reference is rare, particularly for engine codes AGZ, AQN, CCZA or CZEA.

    Frequently asked questions

Is a gearbox for this Volkswagen model in stock?

We currently list 259 references reconditioned for this model. Availability depends on the exact engine: enter your number plate to confirm stock in real time, or request an online quote.

How can I be sure it is compatible with my Volkswagen?

Compatibility depends on the engine / gearbox code, not just the model. The most reliable way is your number plate or registration document: our advisers confirm the right gearbox for your vehicle before you order.

Do I need to send back my old unit?

Yes, that is the principle of an exchange unit: you return your old gearbox (the core), which we recondition in turn. We arrange transport both ways, so you don't have to handle any logistics.

How long does it take to receive the gearbox for my Volkswagen?

Once compatibility is confirmed and depending on the availability of the reference, the part leaves our workshop ready to fit, delivered throughout France and Europe, with payment in instalments available (up to 10 payments).
