A failing Opel turbo: does it matter whether the car is a city runaround or a loaded van?

Not hugely, but almost. A Corsa or a Meriva endures short cycles, repeated cold starts and very little warm-up time — and it is precisely this kind of use that wears the turbo bearings and degrades the lubricating oil. A Vivaro or a Movano, on the other hand, works under sustained load on the motorway, where the turbo runs hot and rarely has time to cool down before the engine is switched off. On an Insignia or a Zafira used for long distances, it is usually the gradual build-up of sludge in the oil circuit — accelerated by infrequent servicing — that eventually destroys the CHRA. Before fitting a new or reconditioned turbo, identifying and addressing the root cause of the failure is essential; otherwise the replacement unit will suffer exactly the same fate.

Opel engine families: 1.3, 1.7, 1.9, 2.2 CDTI and the codes you need to know

The turbocharged Opel diesel range is built around several distinct engine families. The 1.3 CDTI 90 hp (codes Z13DTH, 939 A1.000, common on the Corsa and Meriva) uses a small variable-geometry turbo that is quite different from those fitted to the 1.7 CDTI in its many power variants (65 to 125 hp, codes Y17DT, Y17DTL, Z17DT, Z17DTH, Z17DTL, A17DTJ, A17DTR). These codes are not trivial: a Z17DTH and a Z17DT do not take the same turbo, even on an Astra of the same generation. The 1.9 CDTI (codes Z19DT, Z19DTL, Z19DTH, Z19DTJ, fitted to the Vectra, Zafira, Astra and Signum) produces either 100 or 120 hp depending on the mapping and the associated turbo — again, two variants that are not interchangeable. The 2.2 DTI (code Y22DTR, Vectra, Signum, Zafira) uses a larger wastegate turbo. On the petrol side, codes A16SHT, B16SHT, A16XHT, B16SHL cover the 1.6 turbo petrol engines found in the Astra, Mokka and Crossland, with fixed-geometry turbos that are distinct from the diesel range.

Common symptoms and the identification pitfall across the Opel range

On the 1.7 CDTI, a sharp whistling noise under acceleration followed by a clear loss of power is often the first sign of excessive play on the CHRA shaft. On the 1.3 CDTI, persistent blue smoke on start-up frequently points to worn turbo seals caused by insufficient oil pressure during short urban cycles. The main pitfall across the Opel range is the sheer number of references for a single engine capacity: the engine code stamped on the block is the only reliable identifier for selecting the correct turbo. Opel manufacturer references (e.g. 93169104, 55196765, 55205179) coexist with numerous equivalent references depending on the supply source — always verify the cross-reference before ordering to avoid fitting errors. The collection covers eleven models, from the Combo to the Movano, with both new turbos (outright sale) and reconditioned turbos sold on an exchange basis.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

It depends on the reference: each product page states whether the turbo is new (straight sale, nothing to send back) or reconditioned (exchange basis), together with the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your Opel.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

Only for a reconditioned turbo, sold on an exchange basis: you return your old turbo after the new one has been delivered and fitted, and we arrange the collection. A new turbo is a straight sale: nothing to send back, one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my Opel?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
