    The Renault turbo catalogue splits immediately into a diesel majority and a petrol minority, and this divide shapes everything else. On the diesel side, dCi units — from the 1.5 dCi 90 to the 3.0 dCi 140, including the M9R family and the older 2.8 D/DTi engines found in the Master and Mascott — are fitted almost universally with variable-geometry turbos: the adjustable vanes compensate for the diesel's narrow rev range, but demand an actuator and vane mechanism that are free from play and carbon build-up. On the petrol side, the TCe and 0.9 TCe units (codes H5F, H4B, D4F) use a fixed-geometry wastegate design: simpler in construction, but subject to considerably more severe thermal stress owing to the higher exhaust temperatures inherent in spark-ignition engines.

    Identifying the correct Renault turbo is never a matter of engine capacity alone. A 1.5 dCi 90 and a 1.5 dCi 110 do not share the same turbo. Within the M9R family (2.0 dCi), the variants M9R 630, 650, 692, 710, 712, 714, 717, 780, 782, 784, 786, 788 cover outputs from 90 to 200 hp across the Mégane, Scénic, Laguna, Espace and Kadjar: the same model year and the same quoted power output can conceal different turbine geometries or actuators. On the petrol units, H5F 403, 404, 405, 408 and 412 are not interchangeable despite sharing the same 1.2 TCe capacity. The engine code stamped on the block remains the only reliable reference point, ahead of any manufacturer reference (in the format 144 1XX XXXR on the Renault side) or equivalent reference.

    Symptoms and causes by engine family

    On variable-geometry diesels (the M9R in particular), carbon build-up in the vane mechanism is the primary cause of gradual power loss and limp-home mode. On the 2.8 D/DTi engines fitted to light commercials (Master, Trafic, Mascott), failure most commonly stems from inadequate lubrication: degraded oil or a blocked oil return after a hot engine shutdown. On the TCe petrol units (H5F, H4B, D4F), the CHRA bearings and seals are particularly vulnerable to short thermal cycles — repeated cold starts and engine shutdowns without a cooling-down period. In every case, addressing the root cause of the failure before fitting the replacement — lubrication circuit, EGR, DPF, air intake upstream — is what determines the service life of the fitted part. The turbos listed here are available new or reconditioned depending on the reference; reconditioned turbos are sold on an exchange basis, new turbos are sold outright.

    Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

    It depends on the reference: each product page states whether the turbo is new (straight sale, nothing to send back) or reconditioned (exchange basis), together with the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your Renault.

    What warranty comes with the turbo?

    Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

    Do I need to send back my old turbo?

    Only for a reconditioned turbo, sold on an exchange basis: you return your old turbo after the new one has been delivered and fitted, and we arrange the collection. A new turbo is a straight sale: nothing to send back, one single delivery.
