Which Renault gearbox is compatible with my engine, based on the year and model?

The answer almost always comes down to the engine code, not just the engine capacity. Across the Renault range, the same 1.5 dCi can be paired with several different gearboxes depending on the vehicle generation and engine output: a K9K 700 and a K9K 872 do not share the same transmission, even on a Clio or Kangoo of the same model year.

The main gearbox families by vehicle type

The catalogue covers a wide range: from city cars such as the Twingo, Clio and Captur, through to heavy vans like the Master and Trafic, as well as rarer models — the Avantime, Vel Satis, Wind, R9 and Super 5 — whose gearboxes remain difficult to source. The Master and Trafic vans account for the majority of references, driven by the M9T (M9T 670, 680, 700, 702, 706, 710, 716) in 2.3 dCi and 2.5 dCi, which are fitted across several generations of these vehicles with 6-speed manual gearboxes that are not interchangeable between generations. Common identification pitfalls on the Renault range

The Quickshift gearbox — a 6-speed automated manual fitted to certain Clio and Mégane models — is a clutchless manual gearbox: it is sold without the actuator, unlike a standard manual gearbox. The references in the PF6 family (PF6058, PF6052, PF6050, PF6010) correspond to the 6-speed gearboxes used in vans, whilst the JR5 and JH3 references designate 5-speed gearboxes from the diesel and petrol passenger car range. Mixing up these families is the most common mistake. The engine code stamped on the block — not merely the engine capacity shown on the registration document — remains the only reliable identifier. Models covered span from 1991 to 2024; for references predating the year 2000 (R19, Express, R9), rebuilding the original unit is sometimes the only option available on an exchange basis.
