Golf 1.4 TSI: 6-speed manual or DSG 7 – and why two engine codes can mean two incompatible gearboxes

On the Golf 1.4 TSI, it is not power alone that determines the transmission: it is the combination of engine code and production year that points you towards either the 6-speed manual or the DSG 7. Both families coexist across the same engine capacity between 2006 and 2020, and they are not interchangeable.

Eight engine codes, two distinct transmissions

The 1.4 TSI covers eight referenced engine codes: BMY, BLG, CAXA, CAVD, CXSA, CPTA, CZCA and CZEA. The earliest generations (BMY, BLG, from 2006 onwards) are paired with the 6-speed manual; the more recent codes, notably CZCA and CZEA, correspond to versions fitted with the dry dual-clutch DSG 7. The same "1.4 TSI" badge can therefore conceal radically different transmission architectures: checking the engine code stamped on the block is essential before placing any order.

Key points to watch out for with both families

The dry-clutch DSG 7 (DQ200), fitted to the lower-powered 1.4 TSI variants, is well known for juddering in slow urban driving and for premature clutch wear in certain usage profiles. The gearbox is supplied without the mechatronic unit, with a new dual-clutch assembly included. The 6-speed manual is more robust in everyday use and does not call for the same precautions, but internal references (examples: LHY, PNB, TTT, SEH) vary according to the engine code: a reference taken from a BMY does not necessarily match a CAXA, even at the same power output.

    Frequently asked questions

Is a gearbox for this Volkswagen model in stock?

We currently list 37 references reconditioned for this model. Availability depends on the exact engine: enter your number plate to confirm stock in real time, or request an online quote.

How can I be sure it is compatible with my Volkswagen?

Compatibility depends on the engine / gearbox code, not just the model. The most reliable way is your number plate or registration document: our advisers confirm the right gearbox for your vehicle before you order.

Do I need to send back my old unit?

Yes, that is the principle of an exchange unit: you return your old gearbox (the core), which we recondition in turn. We arrange transport both ways, so you don't have to handle any logistics.

How long does it take to receive the gearbox for my Volkswagen?

Once compatibility is confirmed and depending on the availability of the reference, the part leaves our workshop ready to fit, delivered throughout France and Europe, with payment in instalments available (up to 10 payments).
