Golf 2.0 TDI: 13 engine codes and 4 gearbox types for a diesel built for long distances — and that's precisely where replacement gets complicated

The Golf 2.0 TDI has established itself as the go-to choice for high-mileage drivers: daily motorway runs, regular long journeys, sometimes towing. This intensive use puts far greater demands on the transmission than urban driving ever would, which is exactly why the gearboxes on this engine often give out before the bodywork does. Between 2003 and 2020, 13 engine codes were paired with the 2.0 TDI in the Golf — BMM, BKD, AZV, BMN, CBAB, CFFB, CFHC, CFGB, CRBC, CRLB, CRMB, DCYA, DFGA — and each one does not take the same gearbox.

Four gearbox families, and incompatibilities that leave no room for guesswork

Depending on the generation, the Golf 2.0 TDI was fitted with a 5-speed manual, a 6-speed manual, a DSG 6 or a DSG 7. The early years (AZV, BKD, BMM) were paired mainly with manuals; more recent codes such as CRBC, CRMB or DFGA point towards the DSG. A DSG 6 from a high-mileage vehicle often shows symptoms at the wet clutch or in reverse, while BKD-generation manuals can sometimes struggle to select 5th or 6th gear after several hundred thousand kilometres. The DSG units sold here are supplied without the mechatronic unit, with a new dual-clutch. The engine code stamped on the block remains the only reliable way to confirm compatibility; the vehicle's year alone is not enough to determine which gearbox family applies.

    Frequently asked questions

Is a gearbox for this Volkswagen model in stock?

We currently list 46 references reconditioned for this model. Availability depends on the exact engine: enter your number plate to confirm stock in real time, or request an online quote.

How can I be sure it is compatible with my Volkswagen?

Compatibility depends on the engine / gearbox code, not just the model. The most reliable way is your number plate or registration document: our advisers confirm the right gearbox for your vehicle before you order.

Do I need to send back my old unit?

Yes, that is the principle of an exchange unit: you return your old gearbox (the core), which we recondition in turn. We arrange transport both ways, so you don't have to handle any logistics.

How long does it take to receive the gearbox for my Volkswagen?

Once compatibility is confirmed and depending on the availability of the reference, the part leaves our workshop ready to fit, delivered throughout France and Europe, with payment in instalments available (up to 10 payments).
