14 Renault models, two turbo logics: what the petrol/diesel split actually changes

The Renault turbo catalogue covers 14 models, from the Twingo to the Master, with a large majority of diesel engines. This imbalance is not a minor detail: it directly determines the type of turbo involved. Renault's diesel units — K9K, M9R, M9T, G9T, F9Q, R9M — mostly run variable-geometry turbos (VGT), subjected to high temperatures and the gradual fouling of the moving vanes, particularly in short urban use. Petrol turbos — fitted to the H5F, H4B, H5H, D4F, M5M units — use a fixed geometry with a wastegate, and face even more intense thermal stress: petrol exhaust gases reach far higher temperatures, placing greater demands on the bearings and the CHRA seals.

Diesel: K9K and M9R, the families where identification pitfalls are concentrated

The 1.5 dCi (K9K) is by far the most common engine in this catalogue — Clio, Mégane, Scénic, Kangoo, Captur, Kadjar. Yet the same stated power output can correspond to very different engine codes: on the 1.5 dCi 90, you may find K9K 608, K9K 626, K9K 628, K9K 832, K9K 838, K9K 846 or K9K 892, depending on the model and year. These codes do not necessarily share the same turbo. The same applies to the 2.0 dCi (M9R): codes M9R 630, M9R 692, M9R 780 to M9R 788 cover the 90 and 114 hp versions, while M9R 650, M9R 710, M9R 712, M9R 714 and M9R 717 correspond to the 160 and 200 hp versions — two entirely unrelated levels of forced induction. The 2.3 dCi (M9T) is fitted to the Master and Trafic light commercial vehicles across a range of 100 to 180 hp, with codes M9T 670, M9T 672, M9T 676, M9T 706, M9T 716, M9T 726 or M9T 870 depending on the power output and generation. Checking the engine code stamped on the block remains the only reliable way to select the correct turbo reference.

Petrol TCe: wastegate, symptoms and reassembly precautions

The petrol turbos in this catalogue are all new parts, sold without exchange. On the H5F (1.2 TCe 100 to 132 hp) units — Clio, Mégane, Scénic, Captur — codes H5F 400 to H5F 412 designate closely related but distinct power variants. The H4B (0.9 TCe 90) found in the Twingo and Captur, and the H5H (1.3 TCe 115 to 160 hp) in the Mégane IV, each have their own dedicated turbo. On these petrol units, the symptoms of a failing turbo are well established: abnormal whistling under acceleration, white smoke when the engine is hot, and a gradual loss of performance. Before any replacement, it is essential to diagnose the root cause — lubrication quality, oil condition, air leaks in the intake circuit — otherwise the new part fitted is likely to deteriorate rapidly.
