Audi Gearboxes: from 1996 to 2024, a single 2.0 TDI can conceal more than thirty different engine codes

This is the most common pitfall with Audi: two A3s or two A4s showing the same 2.0 TDI engine designation do not necessarily take the same gearbox. Between a BKD and a CFFB or a CNHA, the casing, shafts and gear ratios can differ considerably. The engine designation alone is not enough: the engine code — stamped on the block — is the only reliable identifier for determining which reconditioned gearbox matches the vehicle.

DSG, manual, dual-clutch: the Audi gearbox families you need to tell apart

The range covers four transmission types: 5-speed and 6-speed manual, DSG 6 and DSG 7. DSG gearboxes (dual-clutch units) are supplied with a new dual-clutch assembly, but without the mechatronic unit — a point to check before ordering if the mechatronic unit is the cause of the fault. Manual gearboxes cover the vast majority of diesel vehicles, from the 1.9 TDI found in the earliest A3s and A4s (engine codes AFN, AGR, ALH, from 1996 onwards) through to the more recent 1.5 TFSI units (DADA, DPCA). The 3.0 TDI and 2.7 TDI quattro engines cover the A5, A6 and Q5, with gearboxes specific to four-wheel-drive transmissions.

A3, TT, A4: the most common models and their specific pitfalls

The A3 accounts for the majority of available references, followed by the TT and the A4. On the TT, engine codes AMK, APX, APY, BAM (1.8 T quattro) correspond to four-wheel-drive gearboxes, which are incompatible with the front-wheel-drive versions of the same engine. On the A6 and Q5, the 3.0 TDI encompasses distinct engine codes (BKN, CAPA, CCWA, CDUC, among others) that do not always share the same casing. The range also extends to rarer models — RS4, RS3, S5, S6 and R8 — for which it is essential to provide the exact engine code. EDEN BOITES offers on this page exchange gearboxes for all listed Audi models, with the option of rebuilding your original unit depending on the engine.

    Frequently asked questions

How much does a reconditioned Audi gearbox cost?

The price depends on the engine and the exact reference, and is always well below the price of a new part. For an exact price for your vehicle, enter your number plate or request a free online quote.

Is this Audi gearbox compatible with my exact model?

We offer 316 references covering the main Audi models. Compatibility is checked against the engine / gearbox code: give us your number plate and we will confirm the exact gearbox for your vehicle.

What is the difference between new, used and exchange?

A used part is resold as is, with no work done. An exchange unit is an original gearbox reconditioned in our workshop, inspected and guaranteed for up to 24 months: reliability close to new, at a used-part price.

What do the warranty and delivery include?

A warranty of up to 24 months, an invoice with every part, return transport arranged for collecting your old unit, delivery throughout Europe and payment in up to 10 instalments.
