1.6 HDi on the 307, 308 or Partner: three different gearboxes under the same bonnet

The 1.6 HDi is the clearest example of this identification trap with Peugeot: depending on whether the engine carries the code 9HX (DV6ATED4), 9HP (DV6DTED) or 9HW (DV6BTED4), and depending on the model — 307, 308, Partner, 207 or 208 — the associated gearbox is not the same. The year of first registration narrows the selection further: a 2008 308 and a 2012 308 with the same 1.6 HDi do not necessarily take the same transmission. Engine capacity alone is never enough to identify the correct part.

Peugeot gearbox families: from the classic 5-speed to automated manual gearboxes

The catalogue covers 27 models, from heavy commercials such as the Boxer and the Expert to city cars such as the 106 and 108, spanning 1991 to 2025. It includes several distinct families: 5-speed manuals, 6-speed manuals, and 3 automated manual gearboxes — the BMP6 (6-speed, found notably on diesel 308 and 3008 models), the BMP5 and the 2-Tronic (5-speed, typical of entry-level petrol 206 and 207 models), as well as the ETG6 on more recent versions. These automated manual gearboxes are sold without the actuator or control unit: only the mechanical gearbox is supplied, which is essential to know before ordering.

Engine codes and known weaknesses by engine family

On the diesel side, the DV units (1.4 HDi, 1.6 HDi) and HDi 2.0 (RHY, RHE, RHH) cover the majority of 306 to 308 vehicles on the road. The Boxer, Expert and Partner commercials use the 2.2 HDi, 2.5 HDi and 3.0 HDi engines (codes 4HV, 4HU, 4HG, 4HH, 4HN), whose 6-speed gearboxes exhibit specific wear patterns linked to heavy loads in intensive commercial use. On the petrol side, the 1.6 THP (codes EB2DT, EB2ADTS) is fitted to recent 208, 308 and 3008 models; the NFU / NFZ (TU5JP4) remains very widespread on the 206 and 207. For the 1.2 PureTech (HN01, HNS, HN05), fitted to the 208, 2008 and 308 from 2012 onwards, the reconditioned gearbox available on an exchange basis is a direct response to the well-documented premature failures seen on this engine generation.
