Reconditioned Volkswagen Gearbox: Exchange or Rebuild – Which Should You Choose?

The question arises as soon as a Volkswagen gearbox fails: go for an exchange unit or send your own in for a rebuild. The answer depends primarily on whether the model is in stock, which generation is involved, and sometimes how rare the reference is. For the most common engines — 1.9 TDI, 1.4 TSI, 2.0 TSI — exchange covers the vast majority of cases. For less common applications (Corrado, LT, Amarok, certain Sharan or Crafter variants with a specific gearbox), rebuilding the original unit is often the only realistic option, as the reference is not always available on an exchange basis.

Gearbox Families and Identification Pitfalls Across the VW Range

The Volkswagen range covers 4-, 5- and 6-speed manual gearboxes, two generations of DSG (6- and 7-speed) and the Shiftmatic, across vehicles from 1981 to 2024.The 7-speed DSG (DQ200, dry clutch) is fitted mainly to the 1.4 TSI and 1.2 TSI; the 6-speed DSG (DQ250, wet clutch) is found on the higher-powered 2.0 TDI and 2.0 TSI.These two families are not interchangeable, even on a Golf of the same year. DSG units are supplied without the mechatronic unit but with a new dual-clutch assembly.

On manual gearboxes, the same engine can come with different gear ratios depending on the model: a Golf and a Touran sharing the same 1.6 TDI (codes CAYB or CAYC) do not necessarily have the same gearbox. Correct identification requires the engine code stamped on the block and the gearbox reference stamped on the casing — not just the engine capacity or the year. Codes such as BKC, BLS or BXE (1.9 TDI) coexist across the Golf, Caddy, Touran and Passat with different gearboxes depending on power output and year of manufacture.

Models Covered: from the Polo to the Transporter

The range spans more than twenty models: Golf and Polo account for the bulk of volume, followed by the Transporter (T4, T5, T6), Touran, Caddy and Scirocco. Older models such as the Bora, Corrado and Lupo are also covered, as are light commercials such as the Crafter and LT. On the Transporter, the 2.5 TDI versions (codes AXD, AXE) use robust mechanical gearboxes but with very specific references; confusion between T4 and T5 is common at the identification stage. For more recent models — T-Roc, Arteon, T-Cross — stock is more limited, and rebuilding the existing unit may be the more practical solution depending on the condition of the original gearbox.
